Happy Mochi Yum Yum / Super Zig

It seems like it’s been about 2 years of keeping mum, but I can finally open the flood-gates and talk about my baby… Happy Mochi Yum Yum. And when I say open the flood-gates… that’s cautionary advise to stand back because I’m going hog wild with the photos, yimmering, yammering and more photos. At the end of this post I have a give-away… but like your mom made you do when it was your birthday - you had to read the card before you could open the prezzie.
Happy Mochi Yum Yum (HMYY) was inspired by the little displays of mochi at the supermarkets when we lived in Hawaii. I’d see the end-cap displays of the mochi and I thought they looked instead like delicious displays of sweet flower bouquets.
And that’s how Mochi Yum Yum was born. I was discussing my line’s name with Pam, and she came up with the genius idea of putting “Happy” in the name. I instantly loved it and walked around my house for weeks reciting it. I even came close to ansering my phone, “happy mochi yum yum”. When my first set of strike-offs came, that very evening I was at Uwajimaya’s and spotted some new mochi in the coldbox. It’s like the Universe was giving me a hug…
… and somehow knew.
Once my yardage came, it was time to get crackin’ on the free pattern for the fabric. After I made my Little Zig, I knew I wanted to make it supersized. A few years ago I spotted a 30’s quilt at the Pomeroy Quilt Show, and have been smitten with the rail fence method ever since. It wasn’t until I saw Amanda Jean’s Zig Zag quilt that it all made sense to me. A rail fence sans a rail. GENIUS!
So with Amanda Jean’s blessings, I set out to make my version using her 2-rail zigzag method and I wrote up instructions for Super Zig.
Hub’s doing The Walking Quilted for me. I will never tire of zombies & quilts. Ever.

In the spirit of the vintage quilt from Pomeroy - maybe I’ll try a black version next.

I love the fabric, but sad to say, I have never developed a taste (or maybe a like of the texture) for mochi. I’ll stick with my manapua, spam musubi, & malasadas!

If I had seen this in my quilting shop I would have looked at the end of the bolt and expected to see your name.I think that is a good thing.I think that is a FUN thing. Now, Zig, I have something fun to say about that pattern, as well. I’m originally from Appalachia, Kentucky, and the minute I saw the pattern I laughed and said, “That’s not ZIG that’s ‘laying the worm’”it’s called that because it looks just like your ZIG and it is the bottom or first layer of a FENCE. If you lay the worm you are laying the first row of a fence….so just because that is such an integral part of my life(plus I love it for the sake of how well it shows off your fabric)Go & be proud!

May 11th, 2011CONGRATULATIONS! What a pretty new line! I think 30307-10 is my favorite … or maybe 30307-40 {I’m so predictable: fun colors and funky flowers and I’m so in!} but they’re all terrific. I can just imagine how much fun it would be to create with this line.
I have to admit ignorance, though. I have no idea what Mochi is. Put m-o-c-h together and my head immediately goes to coffee and chocolate no matter what else is at the end. Checking out the labels is no help it turns out, so off to the Google I go!

May 11th, 2011Love those bright clear colors and love Amanda Jean’s pattern as well. I made it a couple of years ago in black with brights, ranging from yellow to deep purple. Was such fun to make and everyone could not believe how easy it was. Want to do it in other fabrics as well.

Two: Oh, how I miss mochi. I had some when I lived in CA, but here in the time warp that is MS, the only “exotic” foods are tortillas, thai rice noodles, and Walmart sushi (sigh). Your lovely photos bring back great memories. :)

I wish I had been able to go to Quilt Market ( I was actually in town) but I didn’t get to do more than drive by the salt palace a few times! I hope you were able to enjoy Temple Square like you wanted (and maybe caught a glimpse of Donnie) It would have been nice to finally meet you in person though. Maybe next year!

I love that you want each piece in the line, and thank you for your kind words! I do happen to know that Sew,Mama,Sew! and Fat Quarter Shop are each selling the complete line in fat quarters. Many shops are still waiting for their Happy Mochi Yum Yum orders to arrive, so check back here as shops update me with their info. HMYY is selling fast and some shops have already put in re-orders, so hurry - get it now while you can! :o)
